El Salvador: A lower-middle-income country with a population of 6.31 million. In 2021, the estimated rate per 100 000 population was 21.5 (WHO, 2023). El Salvador has not acceded to any of the 7 UN road safety legal instruments.
During the mission, the Special Envoy met with the following officials to advocate for safer roads in the country:

• H.E. Mr. Gustavo Villatoro, Minister of Justice and Public Security;
• H.E. Mr. José Mauricio Pineda, Minister of Education;
• H.E. Dr. Calos Alvarenga, Vice Minister of Health;
• H.E. Mr. Nelson Reyes Vice Minister of Transportation;
• H.E. Ms. Adriana Mira, Vice Minister of Foreign Affairs;
• H.E. Mr. François Bonet, Ambassador of France;
• Mr. Raúl Salazar, Resident Coordinator and the UN Country Team in El Salvador;
• Mr. Abel López Dodero, Senior Transport Specialist, World Bank.
The Special Envoy also delivered a speech at the “Streets for Life” Forum organized by MOVES, a member of the Global Alliance of NGOs for Road Safety, with the support of the Alliance and UNDP.
