Meetings with Government officials and Roundtable on Road Safety at the margins of the ITC of the UNECE

On 23 February 2021, at the margins of the ITC 83rd session, the Special Envoy had bilateral meetings with high-level government officials, to learn about road safety progress and to exchange updates on activities. During these meetings, the Special Envoy encouraged accelerated progress towards global road safety goals as well as support, contributions and applications for potential funding from UNRSF.

The following virtual bilateral meetings were held during ITC session:

o H.E. Mr. François Bausch, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister, Ministry for Mobility and Public Works, Luxembourg;

o H.E. Mr. Vladislav Kryklii, Minister of Infrastructure, Ukraine.

On 26 February 2021, the Special Envoy remotely participated in the ITC side-event “Road safety at a crossroads at the dawn of the new Decade of Action” and delivered opening remarks alongside Ms. Olga Algayerova, Executive Secretary, ECE.

In his speech, the Special Envoy elaborated on the impact of COVID-19 on mobility and transport as well as shared considerations on possible new scenarios post-pandemic. The Special Envoy highlighted the 2030 targets, reaffirmed in the recent UN General Assembly Resolution on Improving Global Road Safety (A/RES/74/299) and encouraged to work together and use the crisis recovery as an opportunity to realize a new mobility, safer and more resilient, as well as build a sustainable system of transportation options.
