The eight session of the UNECE and Ember’s Methane Mondays series was titled: “Addressing methane from coking coal.”

Methane Monday

The session was build around the forecasts that the global steelmaking will continue to use coking coal even under the optimistic decarbonization scenarios. In that context, the participants tried to find out how much methane is emitted from coal mines to power the global steelmaking industry, and discussed the best available methodes of addressing those emissions.

The event included the launch of the Ember’s report titled “Why the steel industry needs to tackle coal mine methane”, which shows that taken over a 20-year time horizon CMM emissions increase the steel industry’s climate impact by at least 27%, and analyses how coking coal demand might change under various decarbonization scenarios.

Among the questions that were addressed in the presentations and the ensuing debate were the following:

  • How much methane is emitted from coal mines to power the global steelmaking industry?
  • How much CMM emissions increase the steel industry’s climate impact?
  • How can methane emissions related to coking coal be addressed?
  • How might coking coal demand change under various decarbonization scenarios?
  • What are the available alternatives to coal in the steel making process?
