The 35th session of the Working Party will examine proposed amendments to the 1968 Vienna Conventions on Road Traffic and Road Signs and Signals and to the Consolidated Resolutions on subjects such as cycle tracks, safety of pedestrians, the use of mobile phones while driving, use of daytime running lamps, assistance to victims of road accidents and road works signing. The Working Party will also start its evaluation of the results of the Third Road Safety Week in the ECE Region which was held from 1-7 May 2000.

The 96th session is expected to finalize a large package of amendments to the TIR Convention which will conclude work under Phase II of the TIR revision process. The Working Party is also expected to review a new annex to the International Convention on the Harmonization of Frontier Controls of Goods relating to efficient border crossing procedures and will consider the extension of the scope of a draft UN/ECE Convention on Rail Customs transit to the countries in Eastern Europe and Central Asia.

The meeting is jointly organised with WHO and hosted by Statistics Canada. A small group of invited experts from academia and statistical agencies will try to make progress on a standard way to measure population health. Measures of health that are valid and comparable cross nationally necessitate not just a common conceptual approach, but also common operational methods. Assessing trends in health status and linking them as outcomes of health policy has become a priority in many countries.

The Ad Hoc Expert Group on Road Traffic Accidents is a follow-up to an earlier meeting on the harmonization of definitions in road traffic accidents (Dec. 1999, Paris). The final terminology decided at this session will be included in the forthcoming third edition of the Glossary for Transport Statistics.

30-31 Task Force on the Implementation of the United Nations Framework Classification for Reserves/Resources (UNFC): Solid Fuels and Mineral Commodities

The Task Force will review the state of application of UNFC in the ECE region. The meeting should adopt the Guidelines for the Practical Application of the Classification. It will also consider a Proposal for extending the UNFC to other energy commodities, namely Petroleum, Natural Gas and Uranium. This could facilitate the worldwide evaluation of the energy reserves/resources based on common principles. The Proposal will be brought to the attention of the ECE Committee on Sustainable Energy which should decide how to further develop this Project, and about the involvement of international organisations.

This team of specialists was established to implement the recommendations of the Forum on E-Commerce for Transition Economies in the Digital Age (Geneva, 19-20 June 2000).

First session of a new Working Party that was established by the Ad hoc Informal Session of the UN/ECE on 21 September 2000. The Working Party will assume responsibility for developing a coherent cross-sectoral enterprise development programme for the UN/ECE with a particular focus on transition economies.
