Working Group on Strategies and Review

The 32nd session of the WGSR will review the implementation of protocols to the Convention on Long-range Transboundary Air Pollution, consider future possible funding mechanisms for core activities, and review information and technologies for further implementation of the Convention. It will prepare a work-plan for 2001 for submission to the Executive Body for the Convention.

4-6 Steering Body to the Cooperative Programme for Monitoring and Evaluation of the Long-range Transmission of Air Pollutants in Europe (EMEP)

The 24th session of the EMEP Steering Body will review the scientific activities of the Programme that now includes the work of the Task Force on Integrated Assessment Modelling. It will consider a new long-term strategy including the proposed activities of the new Task Force on Measurements and Modelling. It will prepare a work-plan for 2001 for submission to the Executive Body for the Convention.

4-6 Working Party on Combined Transport

The thirty-fourth session of WP.24 will discuss possibilities for reconciliation and harmonization of civil liability regimes governing combined transport, focus on the role of railways in the promotion of combined transport, consider a French-English-Russian glossary of terms used in combined transport and discuss the programme of work for 2001 to 2005.
5 3rd Informal Joint UN/ECE-WHO Meeting; Follow-up to the 3rd Ministerial Conference on Environment and Health

The Meeting will review and comment a draft synthesis report prepared by the two secretariats in order to fulfil a mandate given by the Third Ministerial Conference on Environment and Health (London, June 1999). This report includes recommendations on further steps needed to make transport policies more sustainable for health and the environment. The time and place of a ministerial meeting, which would gather Ministers of Environment, Transport and Health, will be discussed.

Study Tour on Certification of Sustainable Forest Management in Forests and Forest Industries

The Joint ECE Timber Committee and FAO European Forestry Commission Study Tour will focus on certification of sustainable forest management and certified forest products in Canada. The tour will include seminars in Quebec and British Columbia and look at examples of certification in forests and forest industries.

Seminar on Trends in the Structure of Steel Consumption

In the context of the competition between materials, information about the latest trends in steel demand is vital. The seminar will gather steel producers, traders, fabricators and the representatives of the main steel consuming sectors. They will study the long term-trends resulting from the continuous modernisation, integration of new technologies and alternative materials by the steel consuming sectors which continuously request higher product quality at lower total cost and lower impact on the environment.

14-15 Working Party on Noise (GRB)

During its thirty-third session GRB, a body subsidiary to the World Forum for Harmonization of Vehicle Regulations (WP.29), will focus on limitation of rolling tyre noise emissions and on improvement of road vehicle noise measurement method.
18-20 Working Party on Transport Trends and Economics

The Meeting will be focused mainly on the development of the Pan-European transport system, and its connections with neighbouring regions (Asia and the Mediterranean), and the development of transport planning methodologies.
18 & 20 COMMITTEE ON HUMAN SETTLEMENTS, Sixty-first session

The Committee will review its programme of work discuss project implementation and results achieved. The projects (a) on Country housing profiles, (b) guidelines on condominiums, (c) on Land-use planning and local transport together with (d) the preparations for the eighth Conference on urban and regional research will be given special importance. The Committee will also discuss the follow up to the Ministerial Declaration (see below) and its contribution to Istanbul +5 in 2001.
19 Ministerial Meeting

Ministers of housing and spatial planning are expected to introduce keynote addresses on the main issues as in the background discussion paper on strategy for a sustainable quality of life in human settlements in the 21st century and its implementation. The meeting is expected to adopt the strategy and a ministerial declaration. The outcome of the discussion will also constitute the ECE contribution to the Istanbul +5 event.

Implementation Committee for the Convention on Long-range Transboundary Air Pollution and its Protocol, 6th meeting

The Committee will, inter alia, review reporting by Parties; finalise a report on Parties' implementation of the first Sulphur and Nitrogen Oxide Protocols; and prepare recommendations on a case submitted by Slovenia concerning the continued operation of a coal-fired power plant leading to high emissions of sulphur.
25-28 COMMITTEE ON ENVIRONMENTAL POLICY, Seventh session

The Committee will consider amend and adopt four EPRs. A round table discussion on supporting ECE multilateral environmental conventions will take place. The Committee will also discuss and decide on possible new legally binding instruments on Strategic Environmental Assessment, on Pollutants Release and Transfer Registers, review its programme of work and decide on new activities.
