Meetings with Government and UN officials in Egypt

The Special Envoy travelled to Cairo, Egypt on 21-23 November 2020 and held bilateral meetings with government stakeholders.

During his meetings, the Special Envoy informed about the new global targets and encouraged safer transport in Egypt and the African and Arab Regions. He congratulated the Government for the reported 41.1% overall reduction in road fatalities between 2014 and 2019. Furthermore, the Special Envoy shared about the UNRSF as well as encouraged accession to the remaining UN Road Safety Conventions.

The Special Envoy met with the following officials in Egypt: 
o    H.E. Mr. Kamel Elwazir, Minister of Transport;
o    H.E. Ms. Hala Zayed, Minister of Health and Population;
o    H.E. Ms. Amani Abou-Zeid, Commissioner for Infrastructure and Energy, African Union.

On 23 November 2020, the Special Envoy met with the United Nations Country Team of Egypt to discuss the road safety situation in the country with its challenges as well as the way forward. The Special Envoy shared about global problem and road safety in the Sustainable Development targets. He also highlighted the UN efforts including the UN Road Safety Strategy, the UNRSF and the UN Road Safety Conventions.

In conclusion, the Special Envoy encouraged the UNCT to closely collaborate with and support the Government of Egypt in achieving national and regional road safety goals, as well as in developing a new National Road Safety Plan 2021-2030. 
Led by Mr. Richard Dictus, UN Resident Coordinator, UNCT members representing the following agencies participated in the meeting: ILO, UNICEF, WFP, UNAIDS, IFAD, UNIC, UN-Habitat, UNDSS and IOM.
