Generative AI For Official Statistics. Mitigating and Monitoring Chapter.

This chapter, part of the forthcoming report Generative Artificial Intelligence in Official Statistics (to be fully published in mid-2025), explores the risks and mitigation strategies associated with integrating generative AI into institutions responsible for official statistics. Other chapters of the report will be released individually over the coming months.

The chapter highlights how generative AI's stochastic and opaque nature can compromise transparency, traceability, and accuracy, while raising critical concerns about data privacy, legal compliance, ethics, and security. Additional challenges include environmental sustainability, operational risks, and the hidden complexities of AI systems.

To address these risks, the chapter outlines technical, policy, and governance strategies, emphasizing secure and responsible AI use. It also discusses the importance of monitoring, evaluating, and auditing generative AI systems to ensure compliance with safety, legal, and ethical standards, while balancing innovation and oversight for the future of official statistics.
