On 19 February 2021, the Special Envoy met with H.E. Amani Abou-Zeid, Commissioner for Infrastructure and Energy, African Union Commission (AUC).
The Special Envoy congratulated the Commissioner for the recent re-appointment as Commissioner for Infrastructure and Energy at the AUC for a second term. Furthermore, the Special Envoy informed of the UN General Assembly Resolution on Improving Global Road Safety (A/RES/74/299) adopted in 2020 and relevant global targets, encouraging the Commissioner’s leadership for governments to prepare national a
ction plans and corresponding financing to align with the calls of the Resolution.
In conclusion, the Special Envoy and the Commissioner explored potential for future joint efforts in the region under the circumstances, including addressing safety standards in the used car market, promoting UN motorcycle helmet standards to allow for market access of affordable quality helmets and securing better road safety data by establishing regional road safety observatories.
