Meeting with Minister of Tourism of Brazil

On 19 June 2019, the Special Envoy met with the visiting Minister of Tourism of Brazil, Mr. Marcelo Álvaro Antônio, in Paris, and discussed the road safety situation in Brazil as well as the way forward.

The Special Envoy presented his mandate and priorities, emphasizing the establishment of UN Road Safety Trust Fund and encouraging support. He further highlighted the importance of safer infrastructure for all users, considering that 53 per cent of road traffic fatalities in Brazil are attributed to vulnerable road users.
The Special Envoy also encouraged Brazil’s accession to and successful implementation of all seven core United Nations road safety conventions, as currently it is a contracting party to only one, namely the 1968 Convention on Road Traffic.

There has been a slight decline in road traffic fatalities in Brazil, according to the latest WHO report, however current fatality rate remains high, estimated at 19.7 deaths per 100,000 population.
