Country visit to Turkey

A transcontinental country located in Eurasia, Turkey is a middle-income state with the population of almost 76,8 million and a per capita income of $9,125 (World Bank, 2015). According to the WHO estimate, Turkey suffers from 6,687 road fatalities annually. According to the WHO data, Turkey has strong laws addressing child seat and seat-belt use. However, drink-driving, speeding, and helmet use laws need to be improved. Turkey is a contracting party to four of six UN Road Safety Conventions.


On 18 February 2017, the Special Envoy met with the below stakeholders in Istanbul:
Mr. Kadir Topbaş, Mayor of Istanbul and Mr. Vasip Şahin, Governor of Istanbul Province
The Special Envoy provided an overview of his mandate and activities. The Mayor presented existing road safety challenges for Istanbul, which is a city situated across two continents with the population of 15,000 inhabitants. The Special Envoy highlighted the role of education and law enforcement in achieving a significant reduction of road crashes in the city. The Special Envoy informed the Mayor of his upcoming activities.
