Since 2000, the United Nations Economic Commission for Europe (UNECE) has coordinated the Generations and Gender Programme, which combines data collection with analysis of demographic trends and the roles of different factors that influence them, that of public policy in particular.

A Society for All Ages - Challenges and Opportunities, 2008Population ageing has become an increasing concern for Governments in the United Nations Economic Commission for Europe (UNECE) region. In most countries, the period which has seen the high proportion of working-age population, the time of the so-called "demographic bonus", is gradually coming to an end. While the degree and timing of this process may vary greatly, the change is common to all countries, posing challenges as well as holding opportunities.

Generations & Gender Programme - Concepts and Guidelines, 2007

The Generations and Gender Programme (GGP) is a system of national Generations and Gender Surveys (GGS) and contextual databases, which aims at improving the knowledge base for policy-making in the UNECE countries. The Generations and Gender Survey is a panel survey of a nationally representative sample of 18-79 year-old resident population in each participating country with at least three panel waves and an internal of three years between each wave. The contextual databases are designed to complement individual-level survey data in multi-level analyses. The Programme is co-ordinated by the UNECE Population Unit.
