Movin’On Conference in Montreal

On 12 June, The Special Envoy was invited to speak at the opening ceremony, along with Mr. Jean-Dominique Senard, CEO of Michelin; Mr. Denis Coderre, Mayor of Montreal; H.E. Mr. Marc Garneau, Canada’s Minister of Transport; and Mr. Pierre Arcand, Quebec Minister of Energy and Natural Resources. In his speech, the Special Envoy gave an overview of the global road safety challenges, with a focus on low- and middle- income countries, where 90% of road traffic fatalities occur. The Special Envoy highlighted the importance of creating safe space for all road users and fostering innovation in that regard - safe mobility and transport for all can result in environmental and economic benefits. 
During his stay in Montreal, the Special Envoy received a special award from the Mayor of Montreal and had bilateral meetings with the Minister of Transport of Canada and Minister attached to the Prime Minister of Thailand's Office:

The Special Envoy gave an overview of the terms of his mandate and his upcoming priorities, such as advancing on establishing the UN Road Safety Fund, and promoting UN Road Safety Conventions. Canada has acceded to one of six UN Road Safety Conventions, and the Special Envoy recommended their accession to the remaining five.

On 13 June the Mayor of Montreal, Mr. Denis Coderre awarded the Special Envoy “the key to the city” - a municipal government award to recognize the valuable contribution made by the Special Envoy for road safety. The signing of the guestbook and an official photograph followed this meeting.

Providing an overview of his mandate and initiatives, the Special Envoy summarized his visit to Thailand in March 2017, including of the Minister of Transport’s participation during the United Nations Road Safety Collaboration meeting, which took place in Bangkok during the visit. They discussed road safety challenges in Thailand, which currently ranks as having the second highest road traffic fatality rate in the world according to the WHO. Dr. Maesincee noted Special Envoy’s recommendations, which he will further discuss with Prime Minister and the Minister of Transport.
