The Executive Body adopted the Protocol on the Reduction of Sulphur Emissions or their Transboundary Fluxes by at least 30 per cent in Helsinki on 8 July 1985 

The general reference year for the calculation of reductions is 1980. Parties shall develop national programmes, policies and strategies as a means of reducing sulphur emissions. In addition, Parties are requested to study the necessity for further reductions.

Emissions of sulphur emissions are also addressed under the 1994 Protocol on Further Reduction of Sulphur Emissions and 1999 Gothenburg Protocol to Abate Acidification, Eutrophication and Ground-level Ozone.
