1993 to 2000
Yves Berthelot of France
was appointed Executive Secretary of the
United Nations Economic Commission for
Europe (UNECE) on 1 October 1993.
Yves Berthelot joined the
French civil service in 1963. He served
in the Ivory Coast as technical assistant
in the Ministry of Planning, then in France
in the Office of the Commissioner for Planning,
in the National Institute of Statistics
and Economic Studies, and in the Ministry
of Cooperation. From 1978 to 1981, he was
Head of Research at the Development Centre
of the Organisation for Economic Co-operation
and Development (OECD) and from 1981 to
1985, he was Director of the Centre d'Etudes
Prospectives et d'Informations Internationales
(CEPII), a French research institute on
world economy. In 1985 he joined the United
Nations as Deputy Secretary-General of the
United Nations Conference on Trade and Development
(UNCTAD).
Mr. Berthelot studied mathematics
and physics at the Ecole Polytechnique in
Paris and economics at the National School
of Economic Administration and Statistics.
He is a member of the International Society
for Development and has been President of
the European Association of Development
Institutes. He has been a member of the
Group of Experts on Quantitative Questions
of the Commission of the European Community.
Born in Paris, France,
on 15 September 1937, Yves Berthelot is
married and has four children.

Yves Berthelot est entré
dans l'administration française en
1963. Il a servi en Côte d'Ivoire
comme assistant technique au Ministère
du plan, puis en France au Commissariat
au plan, à l'Institut national des
statistiques et des études économiques
(INSEE), et au Ministère de la coopération.
De 1978 à 1981, il a été
Directeur de la recherche au Centre de développement
de l'Organisation de coopération
et de développement économiques
(OCDE) et de 1981 à 1985, il a été
Directeur du Centre d'études prospectives
et d'informations internationales (CEPII),
un institut de recherche français
sur l'économie mondiale. En 1985,
M. Berthelot est entré aux Nations
Unies où il a été nommé
Secrétaire général
adjoint de la Conférence des Nations
Unies sur le commerce et le développement
(CNUCED).
M. Berthelot a étudié
les mathématiques et la physique
à l'Ecole polytechnique et l'économie
à l'Ecole nationale de la statistique
et de l'administration économique
à Paris. Il est membre de la Société
internationale pour le développement
et a présidé l'Association
européenne des instituts de développement.
Il a fait partie du groupe d'experts pour
les questions quantitatives de la Commission
des communautés européennes.
Yves Berthelot est né
à Paris le 15 septembre 1937. Il
est marié et père de quatre
enfants.
