Mrs. Brigita Schmögnerová
of Slovakia was
appointed Executive Secretary of the United
Nations Economic Commission for Europe
(UNECE) on 28 February 2002.
Ms. Schmögnerová was
born on 17 November 1947 in Bratislava,
Slovakia. She completed her university
studies, earning her PhD degree from the
School of Economics in Bratislava. She
pursued professional training at the University
of Athens and Georgetown University in
Washington, D.C. Ms. Schmögnerová worked
as a researcher in the Institute of Economics,
Slovak Academy of Sciences, and as a lecturer
at the University of Economics, Bratislava.
Ms. Schmögnerová served
as economic adviser to the President of
the Slovak Republic (1993), Deputy Prime
Minister (1994), and Finance Minister (1998-2002).
From 1995-1998 she served as a Member of
Parliament.
Ms. Schmögnerová was
awarded the World Finance Minister of the
Year Award (2000) by Euromoney Institutional
Investor PLC, which cited her courage in
implementing important reforms in the banking
sector, macroeconomic stabilization programmes,
tax administration and fiscal management.
In her capacity as a Governor
or alternate Governor, Ms. Schmögnerová worked
closely with the International Monetary
Fund, the World Bank and the European Bank
for Reconstruction and Development. She
also contributed to the Slovak membership
in the Organisation for Economic Co-operation
and Development (OECD) (2000) and acceleration
of the Slovak pre-accession process to
the European Union.
Ms. Schmögnerová has
published numerous articles in the fields
of econometrics, privatization and transition.
She has also written books of poetry and
essays.
Ms. Schmögnerová is
married, with one son.

Mme Brigita Schmögnerová,
née le 17 novembre 1947 à Bratislava
(Slovaquie), a achevé ses études
universitaires à l'Ecole d'économie
de cette ville où elle a obtenu
un doctorat. Après avoir poursuivi
sa formation professionnelle à l'Université d'Athènes
et à l'Université de Georgetown à Washington,
D.C., elle a travaillé en tant que
chercheur à l'Institut d'économie,
l'Académie des sciences slovaque,
et en qualité de maître de
conférence à l'Université d'économie
de Bratislava.
Après avoir rempli les fonctions
de conseiller économique auprès
du Président de la Slovaquie en
1993, Mme Schmögnerová a été Vice-Premier
Ministre (1994) et Ministre des finances
(1998-2002). Elle était membre du
Parlement de 1995 à 1998.
Le prix mondial du Ministre des finances
de l'Année lui a été décerné en
2000 par Euromoney Institutional Investor
PLC, pour son courage dans la mise en œuvre
de réformes importantes dans le
secteur bancaire, de programmes de stabilisation
macroéconomique, l'administration
et la gestion fiscales.
En sa qualité de Gouverneur ou
de Gouverneur suppléant, Mme Schmögnerová a
travaillé en étroite collaboration
avec le Fonds monétaire international
(FMI), la Banque mondiale et la Banque
européenne pour la reconstruction
et le développement (BERD). Elle
a également contribué à la
participation de la Slovaquie à l'Organisation
de coopération et de développement économiques
(OCDE) en 2000, ainsi qu'au processus d'accélération
de la préaccession de son pays à l'Union
européenne.
Mme Schmögnerová a publié de
nombreux articles sur l'économétrie,
la privatisation et la transition. Elle
a aussi écrit des livres de poésie
ainsi que des essais.
Mariée, Mme Schmögnerová a
un fils.
