International Agreements - Introduction and Status

Since its creation in 1947, UNECE Inland Transport Committee (ITC) has been a framework for intergovernmental cooperation and concerted action in order to facilitate international transport while improving its safety and environmental performance. The mission, work priorities and activities of ITC have evolved in unison with specific challenges of the times and the needs of its member Governments. From its inception, the overarching task of the Committee was to systematically address all the elements which contribute to the facilitation and security of the international transport of goods and people, but over the years it has specialized in inland modes of transport, transport of dangerous goods and other sensitive cargo, and in vehicle regulations.

The main results of this persevering and ongoing work are reflected, among other things, in 58 United Nations conventions and many more technical regulations, which are updated on a regular basis and provide an international legal framework for the sustainable development of national and international road, rail, inland water and intermodal transport, including the transport of dangerous goods, as well as the construction and inspection of road motor vehicles. These agreements and conventions, a large number of which are kept constantly updated, are legally binding for the States who become Contracting Parties to them.

The list of the 58 United Nations Agreements and Conventions in the field of transport, as well as summary tables containing information on the status of these regional and global legal instruments with regard to signatures, ratifications, accessions and acceptances by countries members of the United Nations, is reproduced below.
