Mission to New York, USA

From 29 June to 2 July 2022, the Special Envoy travelled to New York for the HLM. 


Specifically on 30 June 2022, the Special Envoy delivered opening remarks at the High-Level Meeting on Global Road Safety (HLM) and, on the occasion, highlighted that action and delivery are needed to improve road safety. The Special Envoy shared that multiple voices need to be involved in the early stages of city and road planning to ensure safety. Lastly, the Special Envoy reminded everyone that road safety is linked to the success of other global targets like tackling climate change, gender inequality, unequal access to education and beyond.

On the HLM’s margins, the Special Envoy attended the following:
•    Side event “Action for good vision on the road. Together for safer roads”, hosted by Essilor Luxottica. The Special Envoy gave the opening speech in which he advocated for spreading awareness on vision disabilities when driving. The Special Envoy highlighted the need for checking vision regularly, protecting eyes from glare and wearing prescription glasses on the road; 

•    Side event “Global Drive to Action”, hosted by UNICEF. The Special Envoy gave his remarks and advocated for keeping children safe by reducing private vehicle use, ensuring equal access for marginalized populations, and developing meaningful engagement of youth in the decision-making process; 

•    Side event “Integrating Road Safety into the SDGs – lessons learned and achievements”, hosted by the Permanent Mission of Sweden to the UN. The Special Envoy included in his speech that the HLM is a big step towards progress and commended the Stockholm Declaration for making a pivotal difference in raising this issue and bringing the Second Decade of Action for Road Safety 2021-2030 to the forefront;

•    Friends for Road Safety Network event hosted by the H.E. Mr. Maurizio Massari in New York, gathering officials from the UN, diplomatic community as well as private and public sector representatives. The Special Envoy highlighted the significance of the HLM, encouraged increased support for the UNRSF and recommended more international development assistance for road safety.

The Special Envoy met with the following Government officials, partners, and UN officials to update on the HLM, inform of the JCDecaux Campaign on Road Safety, encourage future opportunities to collaborate and support to the UNRSF.
