Changes from JQ2019 to JQ2020   Below is a complete list of all changes to JQ2020. Items in bold are significant changes.   1) Definitions a) Included additional products under definition of production b) Changed definition of veneer to exclude veneer used for plywood (item 7). National dialogue in Georgia builds momentum for clean air policies

Premature mortality attributable to poor air quality results in high costs. For example, a study by WHO and OECD estimates that in 2010 costs of air pollution related premature deaths in Georgia were at about 9 billion USD. The main sources of air pollution are the transport and agricultural sectors (NOx) industrial processes (SO2) and residential heating (PM).  

Georgia is stepping up efforts towards using public procurement as a driver of innovation for sustainable development

Public procurement represents 10 per cent of Georgia’s GDP. Therefore, innovation-enhancing procurement (IEP) can be a powerful policy lever to catalyze innovation and promote sustainability. Using public procurement to drive innovation is one of the recommendations arising from the Innovation for Sustainable Development Review (I4SDR) of Georgia, published by UNECE in 2021 with funding from the Swedish Government.

2024 General Population Census in Georgia

The 2024 Population Census will be conducted including the

agricultural component:

• Optimal use of available resources (both financial and human

resources);

• Strong need for an update in both areas (last Population and

Agricultural Censuses were conducted in 2014);

• Agricultural activities are mainly carried out in households.

Use of Geographic Information System (GIS) :

• To collect data on the initial list of households by each building;

• Divide country by equal statistical areas (EA, SA);

• Monitoring the fieldwork;

• Dissemination of results.

Перепись населения 2024 года будет включать

сельскохозяйственный компонент:

• Оптимальное использование доступных ресурсов

(финансовые ресурсы и кадры);

• Серьезная необходимость обновления по обоим

направлениям (последние перепись населения и

сельскохозяйственная перепись проводились в 2014 году);

• Сельскохозяйственная деятельность ведется в основном в

домохозяйствах.

Использование географической информационной системы (ГИС) :

• Собрать данные по первоначальному перечню домохозяйств для каждого здания;

• Разделить страну на равные статистические районы (РР, СР);

• Контролировать полевые работы;

• Распространить результаты.

UNECE supports Armenia, Azerbaijan, Georgia, the Republic of Moldova and Ukraine in taking stock of progress on strategic environmental assessment and transboundary environmental impact assessment

UNECE delivers a wide range of technical assistance and capacity building activities to support the countries of the Caucasus and Eastern Europe to enhance strategic environmental assessment (SEA) and transboundary environmental impact assessment (EIA). An effective system for environmental assessments prevents and mitigates damage to the environment and health from economic growth. After the COVID-19 pandemic, which challenged healthcare systems and economies world-wide, economic recovery efforts make systematic and effective environmental assessment more necessary than ever.  

Unleashing the vast potential of public procurement to foster demand for innovation in support of sustainable development in Eastern Europe and the South Caucasus

Countries of the Eastern Europe and the South Caucasus (EESC) sub-region (Armenia, Azerbaijan, Georgia, the Republic of Moldova, and Ukraine) have a lot of potential to continue the transition to a more sustainable economic growth model that is less vulnerable to external shocks. Innovation, or experimentation with new ideas, is crucial to making the most of this potential and must take central stage on their policy agendas.

UNECE supports Georgia’s commitment to applying strategic environmental assessment

A pilot project in Georgia was kicked off as part of UNECE’s longstanding support to enhancing the country’s strategic environmental assessment (SEA) and transboundary environmental impact assessment systems in accordance with the UNECE Protocol on SEA and the Convention on Environmental Impact Assessment in a Transboundary Context (Espoo Convention). The pilot will provide Georgia hands-on learning for the effective practical application of its 2017 Environmental Assessment Code that UNECE helped develop.

Innovation for Sustainable Development Review of Moldova

Since independence, Moldova has navigated the challenging transition to a market economy while achieving significant, albeit volatile, economic growth, reduced poverty levels and the status of a lower-middle-income economy. However, productivity growth has declined as original drivers of structural change in the early post-independence era have run out of steam.
