Concept note and draft outcome document of the Eighth International Forum on Energy for Sustainable Development and Energy Ministerial

The Committee on Sustainable Energy is pleased to present for public comment the “Concept note and draft outcome document of the Eighth International Forum on Energy for Sustainable Development and Energy Ministerial” (ECE/ENERGY/2016/9). 

The Eighth Forum on Energy for Sustainable Development (Eighth Forum) will be held in Astana, Kazakhstan, on 11–14 June 2017. It will begin with an Energy Ministerial on “Meeting the challenges of sustainable energy” in the framework of the EXPO 2017 “Future Energy”. It is organized by the Government of Kazakhstan with the support of the United Nations Regional Commissions and interested partners. The Governments of Azerbaijan and Kazakhstan have collaborated to develop a concept, process and draft outcome document to support the Energy Ministerial that will be held on 11 June 2017. The document will be presented to the Committee on Sustainable Energy for endorsement at its twenty-fifth session on 19 January 2017 (resumed session).

The objective of the Eighth Forum is to build on the outcomes and experiences from previous fora and to agree on potential solutions. The Eighth Forum will present ministers with a menu of options about how countries could attain the energy-related Sustainable Development Goals and implement national pledges and ambitions based on thorough analysis of the gaps and the challenges ahead. The event is about understanding and then closing the gap quickly, seeking to advance solutions that promote energy efficiency and low-carbon energy technologies and policies. The purpose of the document is to enable participating ministers to commit to concrete actions by the energy community to accelerate achievement of the energy-related Sustainable Development Goals.
