Workshop on Coal Mine Methane and Abandoned Mine Methane in the context of Sustainable Energy

23 October 2017
Salle VIII, Palas des Nations Geneva Switzerland

The workshop was organised by the UNECE Group of Experts on Coal Mine Methane in cooperation with the Global Methane Initiative (GMI).

The participants were presented with cross-cutting activities conducted under the Committee on Sustainable Energy. In particular, they were informed in detail about the project on Transformation of the Energy Sector and on the Pathways Project. The experts explored potential avenues of how the expertise of the Group could be employed in these projects in order to contribute in the most efficient manner to their further development.

The workshop also addressed issues related to the United Nations Framework Classification for Resources (UNFC), focusing on the status of Coal Mine Methane (CMM), Abandoned Mine Methane (AMM) and Ventilation Air Methane (VAM) within this system.

The main part of the meeting was dedicated to the subject of Abandoned Mine Methane. This matter had not been addressed by the Group of Experts in greater detail before. However, it is to be given much more attention in the upcoming biennium. Consequently, the session on AMM was conceived as an introductory event aiming to familiarise the Group with challenges and opportunities within this field. In addition, the session equally acted as a probing exercise, helping the Group to determine what concrete activities it is best suited to undertake in order to positively mark its presence in this domain.

Please see also a news article briefly summarizing the meeting.
