Global Methane Forum 2020 (GMF 2020) is an event sponsored by the United Nations Economic Commission for Europe (UNECE) and the Global Methane Initiative (GMI).
A five-day-long conference titled Taking Action for Sustainable Energy and a Clean Environment will feature:
- Presentations about proven, innovative methane mitigation techniques and productive uses of recovered methane;
- Recognition celebration for participants in the Global Methane Challenge;
- Joint meetings of UNECE Group of Experts and GMI Sub-Committees.
Details about the Forum as well as all relevant documents will be posted under the respective tabs on the bottom of this page, as well as at globalmethane.org/gmf2020. Please check both websites for updates.
Participants will follow three separate thematic tracks on methane emissions from the coal, oil and gas, and bio-gas sectors.
Plenary Session
On Tuesday, 24 March, all attendees will gather in Salle XXI for a cross-cutting plenary session featuring high-level speakers from governments, international organizations, and industry.
The two panel discussions that will follow the keynote speeches will address the financial aspects of methane mitigation, with special attention to the costs and consequences of inaction, and will attempt to identify the most effective drivers of action to reduce emissions, focusing on regulation, industry voluntary action, innovation, and coordination of efforts of various stakeholders across different extractive industries at any stage of their value chains.

UNECE Events
Within the framework of GMF2020, the UNECE Sustainable Energy Division will hold annual sessions of two Expert Groups, namely on:
- Coal Mine Methane (15th session, 23 March, Salle XXI), and
- Gas (7th session, 26-27 March, Salle XVI).

On 25 March two workshops will be held
- on Abandoned Mine Methane and Mine Closure, organized by the Group of Experts on Coal Mine Methane, which is to be held in Salle XXIV, and
- on Decarbonized Gases that is to take place in Room S4.
On 27 March a workshop on Coal Transition organized jointly with Boston University will be held in Concordia 4
GMI Events
GMF2020 will feature a meeting of GMI Steering Committee (23 March, Room S4, 25 March, Salle IV), as well as sessions of three GMI Sub-Committees, on:
- Coal (23 March, Salle XVIII),
- Biogas (23 March, Salle IV),
- Oil and Gas (25 March, Concordia 1).
CCAC Events (TBC)
On 27 March Climate and Clean Air Coalition (CCAC) will hold a Science Advisory Panel in Room XXVII.
