Hotel Plaza Brussels Belgium

co-organized by UNECE, DG GROW, EuroGeoSurveys, HE projects “Geological Service for Europe” and “FutuRaM”

The European Union's Critical Raw Materials Act (CRMA), which entered into force on 23 May 2024, is at the forefront for achieving the EU's objectives toward green and just transition by making a significant step towards securing the supply of Critical Raw Materials (CRMs). The United Nations Framework Classification for Resources (UNFC) is mandated in the Act to support its effective implementation, as the classification tool for EU Member States to report on their national CRMs exploration results, new and existing CRMs projects for monitoring purposes, and closed extractive wastes as part of national circularity measures. Additionally, UNFC is required by Project Promoters seeking recognition for Strategic Projects. UNFC facilitates informed decision-making and policy interventions, thereby contributing to the successful achievement of the CRMA's objectives.

The 7th Event on UNFC and the United Nations Resource Management System (UNRMS) at the EU Raw Materials Week 2024, co-organized by UNECE, DG GROW, EuroGeoSurveys, WEEE, and the Horizon Europe (HE) projects “Geological Service for Europe” and “FutuRaM”, will provide a platform for dialogue and collaboration among key stakeholders, including National Administrations, decision-makers, and the expert community. The event scheduled on 10 December 2024 will consist of two sessions. As the EU embarks on the first year of implementing the CRMA, both sessions will serve to exchange knowledge, experiences, and best practices related to UNFC’s role in supporting the CRMA. The objective is to ensure the successful coherent integration of UNFC into CRMA implementation and the broader strategy for securing the EU's supply of CRMs, fostering collaboration between policymakers, national authorities, and experts.

The High-Level Session, aimed at National Administrations and decision-makers, will address the integration of UNFC within CRMA, and its implications. This session will cover topics related to UNFC’s role in supporting CRMA's objectives, current state of the play and future activities, including the UNFC Evaluation Process for Strategic Projects and reporting requirements for EU Member States under CRMA.

The Technical Session, designed for the expert community, will delve into the coordinated activities for UNFC implementation in the EU, recent developments, progress in UNFC to support CRMA, and efforts to bridge national and international classification systems and create mineral inventories with UNFC. Additionally, this session will provide an outlook on upcoming UNFC-related activities within Horizon Europe projects.
