Addressing the compounded food and energy crisis in Ukraine through innovative technologies and adaptive agricultural practices

UNECE is implementing extrabudgetary project “Addressing the compounded food and energy crisis in Ukraine through innovative technologies and adaptive agricultural practices.” The project is part of a Joint SDG Fund Development Emergency Modality – Response to the Global Crisis on Food, Energy, Finance project to be implemented in Ukraine. The overall objective of the project is to equip the Government of Ukraine with an objective and comprehensive analysis of the biofuel production potential to solve the compound food/energy crisis in Ukraine. The project is developed in response to the request of the Ministry of Agrarian Policy and Food for support to address fuel shortages in the agriculture sector.

Strengthening energy policies of Countries with Special Needs to build back better from COVID-19

UNECE is an implementing partner in the UN Development Account project “Strengthening energy policies of Countries with Special Needs to build back better from COVID-19” led by ESCAP. There are eight beneficiary countries of the project: Armenia, Sri Lanka, Federated States of Micronesia, Kazakhstan, Kiribati, Maldives, Mongolia, and Uzbekistan. Three of them are member States of both UNECE and ESCAP: Armenia, Kazakhstan, and Uzbekistan. UNECE is responsible for implementing project activities in these countries. The project aims to improve the capacity of policymakers by supporting them to develop SDG 7 roadmaps which enable the delivery of both the sustainable energy transition and the economic recovery from COVID-19.

COMPLETED PROJECTS

Global Initiative towards post-Covid-19 resurgence of the MSME sector

UNECE is an implementing partner in the UN Development Account project “Global Initiative towards post-Covid-19 resurgence of the MSME sector” led by UNCTAD and UN ESCWA. The overall goal of the project is to strengthen the capacity and resilience of micro-, small and medium enterprises (MSMEs) in developing countries and economies in transition to mitigate the economic and social impact of the global COVID-19 crisis. In the framework of the project, the Sustainable Energy Division focuses on developing Guidelines and Best Practices for MSMEs to assure resiliency and progress towards a circular economy in sustainable resource management and critical raw material supply chain solutions and Guidelines and Best Practices for MSMEs in delivering energy efficient products and in providing renewable energy equipment. The reports will be used to develop an online training course and customize their findings for several pilot countries in the UNECE region.

Enhancing national capacities to develop and implement energy efficiency standards for buildings in the UNECE region

UNECE was implementing the extrabudgetary project “Enhancing National Capacities to Develop and Implement Energy Efficiency Standards for Buildings in the UNECE Region” (funded by the Russian Federation). It was implemented under the auspices of the Joint Task Force on Energy Efficiency Standards in Buildings. The project aimed to enhance capacity of the UNECE member States to develop and implement energy efficiency in buildings, with a focus on residential buildings.

Improving capacity of the Government of Ukraine to develop infrastructure for production and use of hydrogen to support green post-covid-19 recovery

UNECE was implementing project “Improving capacity of the Government of Ukraine to develop infrastructure for production and use of hydrogen to support green post-covid-19 recovery” (funded from the Regular Programme on Technical Cooperation (RPTC)). It was implemented jointly by the Sustainable Energy, Sustainable Transport, and Environment Divisions. Hydrogen is a renewable and clean source of energy that supports circular economy. Ukraine is experiencing an economic downturn as a consequence of the Covid-19 pandemic. Development of infrastructure to produce and use hydrogen in Ukraine will facilitate its economic recovery in an environmentally friendly manner, increase its energy security and efficiency, improve the economic climate and create new employment opportunities.
