Inter-regional cooperation for the implementation of the New Urban Agenda

Implementation period: January 2020 - May 2023

Project description:

Through this project, the five UN Regional Commissions and UN-Habitat will: support national governments and selected cities in consolidating their role in achieving sustainable development; increase policy coherence among member States across the regions; and promote the improved capacity of institutions and “human agents of change” in the implementation of the New Urban Agenda (NUA). This requires a greater integration of various dimensions (regional, national, local) of the programme through a variety of activities, including:

     (i)     Building the capacity of national-and local-level decision makers in the implementation, monitoring and reporting of the NUA and urban SDGs;
     (ii)    Establishing mechanisms for sharing of information and successful practices;
     (iii)    Facilitating an inclusive process of knowledge generation and dissemination through regional monitoring and reporting on sustainable urbanization.

In the UNECE region, the city of Almaty (Kazakhstan) was selected as the beneficiary of the project.

The project will support the implementation of the 2050 Kazakhstan vision in Almaty in line with the 2030 Agenda. This will be achieved through sustainable smart city development engaging public and private actors with the help of:

     (i)     The evaluation of the city’s performance as sustainable and smart, using the U4SSC KPIs Collection Methodology;
     (ii)    The development of an investment proposal to attract potential private sector partners to further develop the city as sustainable and smart.
