High-level Policy Segment

The ITC High-level policy segment paved the way for cross-border solutions to tackle the impacts of the pandemic and accelerate economic growth under the theme: “Back to a sustainable future: achieving resilient connectivity for post-COVID-19 sustained recovery and economic growth”.
The purpose of the annual session was to address the weaknesses exposed by the responses to the pandemic that disrupted the supply chains of the inland transport systems that link economic activity worldwide and bridge national borders. The key recommendations on transport responses expected from the Committee’s plenary laid the foundations for making inland transport systems more resilient and thus achieving sustained, as well as full, recovery for our member States and Contracting Parties.

Ministerial Resolution

The High-level policy segment concluded with the endorsement of the Ministerial Resolution on “Enhancing resilient inland transport connectivity in emergency situations: an urgent call for concerted action” by participating Ministers, deputy Ministers and Heads of delegations of Contracting Parties to the United Nations Transport Conventions under the purview of the ITC.

Regular session

The decision-making agenda of the 83rd session of the ITC covered issues of global importance, including the implementation of the ITC Strategy until 2030. Member States/Contracting Parties and transport leaders from strategic partners forged concerted responses to shared challenges disrupting global supply chains, and take strategic decisions on cutting-edge areas such as road safety, autonomous vehicles, and transport digitalization. You can find the weekly programme here.

Side event: Road Safety Roundtable

The annual session was be enriched on Friday, 26 February 2021, by the ITC Roundtable on “Road safety at a crossroads at the dawn of the new Decade of Action” that brought together key worldwide stakeholders for a strategic discussion on the new course of action that is needed in order to make measurable progress in successfully addressing the continuing crisis.

Side event: Sustainability of transport and trade connectivity in the Caspian Sea region in the age of pandemics

The Permanent Mission of Turkmenistan to the UN Office at Geneva jointly with the UNECE and the UN-OHRLLS organized this side event, dedicated to the 30th Anniversary of Independence of Turkmenistan and the 2021 International Year of Peace and Trust. Participants came together to discuss unification and cohesion of the transport logistics industry, sustainable multimodal transit corridors and relevant future international cooperation. These discussions are necessary to not only restore economic dynamism considering the pandemic, but also to seize the opportunity to build a more equitable, inclusive, and sustainable future.
