In Memoriam of Mr. J. Byrgesen

It is with deep sorrow that the UNECE TIR secretariat has learned of the death of Mr. J. Byrgesen, the distinguished delegate of Denmark to the UNECE Working Party on Customs Questions affecting Transport (WP.30), the TIR Administrative Committee (AC.2) and other relevant Administrative Committees under the auspices of the UNECE. Mr. Byrgesen participated for many years very actively and constructively in the work of these intergovernmental bodies and was recognized as an expert in Customs matters, having 38 years of service with the Danish Customs Administration. Mr. Byrgesen was in 1996 elected Chairman of the TIR Administrative Committee and served on several occasions as Chairman of various working groups in relation to the TIR Convention. In 2000 Mr. Byrgesen worked as a valued staff member of the UNECE TIR secretariat in Geneva. His expertise will be highly missed.
Ms. Martina gren, Chairperson of the TIR Administrative Committee and Mr. Guus Jacobs, Chairman of WP.30 have transmitted the following message:
"Today, April 18, 2006, we received the sad news that Mr. John Byrgesen passed away on Wednesday, 12 April 2006 due to a heart attack. By means of this message we should like to express our sincere sympathies to his wife, family, friends as well as colleagues of the Danish Customs Administration. The Working Party and the TIR Administrative Committee lose in Mr. Byrgesen a highly respected and knowledgeable colleague. May he rest in peace."
The funeral service will take place on Thursday, 20 April, noon from Grndalskirken, Copenhagen (Denmark).
