On 30 May 2019, the Special Envoy visited Hungary at the invitation of H.E. Dr. László Palkovics, Minister for Innovation and Technology of Hungary.
Upon providing an overview of his mandate and priorities, the Special Envoy commended Hungary’s vision for significant reduction of road traffic fatalities, referencing the ambitious target in the National road safety strategy aimed at reducing road traffic fatalities by 50% between 2017-2020. He encouraged the Minister to adopt a Vision Zero approach using safe systems principles, considering that more than half of road crashes in Hungary are attributed to drivers and passengers of cars.
The Special Envoy further presented newly-established UN Road Safety Trust Fund (UNRSTF) aimed at supporting Member States’ road safety efforts and encouraged support and contributions. Shortly after the Special Envoy’s visit, Hungary announced its contribution to the UNRSTF.
