However, it also brings significant socioeconomic, environmental and health challenges. In most countries, public policies at all levels do not deal with transport, health, environment, and urban planning issues holistically.

Renault Group takes a stand alongside the United Nations Special Envoy for Road Safety to make mobility safer

Renault Group and the United Nations, via the UN Economic Commission for Europe (UNECE), have entered into a two-year strategic partnership agreement to support the work of the UN Secretary-General’s Special Envoy for Road Safety, Jean Todt. 

With this partnership, Renault Group has become the first automobile manufacturer to take a stand alongside the Special Envoy’s Secretariat and is stepping up its long-standing commitment to increasingly safe and accessible mobility in all its markets.

Addressing the Plenary of the Summit of the Future during the UN General Assembly, UNECE Executive Secretary Tatiana Molcean noted that with its strong normative footprint, UNECE is fully dedicated to leveraging and adapting its tools, expertise, and partnerships to reinvigorate the implementation of SDGs across multiple areas, including climate action, through the decarbonization of inland transport, the energy transition, and transboundary water management.  

UN Secretary-General’s Special Envoy for Road Safety Jean Todt to launch UN Global Road Safety Campaign in Italy

The UN Secretary-General's Special Envoy for Road Safety, Jean Todt, will be in Milan on 2 September to launch the UN global campaign #MakeASafetyStatement, in partnership with JCDecaux. The launch event will gather Mr. Giuseppe Sala, Mayor of Milan and Mr. Matteo Salvini, Vice-President of the Council of Ministers and Minister of Infrastructure and Transport of Italy.

UN Special Envoy for road safety visits Latin America to battle silent pandemic on the roads

The United Nations (UN) Secretary-General's Special Envoy for Road Safety, Jean Todt, will visit Ecuador (20-21 August), Peru (22-24) and Chile (24-28) this week. During the visit, he will meet with key government officials, representatives of the international community, private, and public sectors to promote road safety initiatives and advocate for enhanced measures. This aligns with the Global Plan for the Decade of Action for Road Safety 2021-2030, aiming to halve road fatalities by 2030.

Speed limit enforcement needs to be prioritized in Moldova to better protect the safe movement of people, says new UN Road Safety Performance Review

Despite a rapid increase in motorization over the past 20 years, the number of people killed in road crashes in the Republic of Moldova has decreased by 51% from 2011 to 2022, from 443 to 217. With 8.3 deaths per 100,000 inhabitants, this is, however, still 1,8 times higher than the average in the European Union, states the newly released United Nations Road Safety Performance Review of Moldova.

UN adopts a more robust method to detect particle emissions from diesel vehicles

UNECE’s World Forum for Harmonization of Vehicle Regulations (WP.29) has adopted an amendment to the United Nations Rule No.1 of the 1997 Agreement that allows for the introduction of a more robust test procedure to measure exhaust particle emissions during periodic technical inspection tests for all diesel light-duty vehicles (passenger cars and vans) equipped with diesel particulate filters.
