UN Vehicle Regulation will increase road safety thanks to "Black-box" collecting information on crashes

Understanding the conditions of road crashes supports the assessment of how vehicles’ safety equipment performs, which can help to improve these systems to reinforce safety on the road. A new UN Regulation which entered into force on 30 September 2021 will introduce a major breakthrough in information gathering about road crashes with the introduction of Event Data Recorders (EDR) aboard vehicles.

The United Nations Road Safety Fund launches 10 new projects in 14 low-and middle-income countries

Ensuring that children in Paraguay have safer ways to get to and from schools; strengthening the medical post-crash response in Bangladesh; developing streets for safer and low-carbon mobility of pedestrians and cyclists in East Africa; and strengthening road safety data management and policy design in the Arab region are some of the goals of the 10 new projects financed by the United Nations Road Safety Fund (UNRSF).

Safer streets for pedestrians and cyclists will boost Ethiopia’s sustainable recovery, through joint action supported by UN Road Safety Fund

Massive scaling up in funding will be needed to halve the number of victims on the road by 2030

Mobility is a primary enabler of our economic and social life. However, despite its many benefits, the costs of mobility to societies around the world remain unacceptably high. These include greenhouse gas emissions (transport accounts for some 24% of global CO2 emissions, three quarters of which is from road vehicles), pollution, and the road crashes that alone claim 1.4 million lives annually, or some 3,800 fatalities every single day.

From Paraguay to the Philippines, UN Road Safety Fund shows path to save children’s lives and address key dangers

As the world enters in a new Decade of Action for Road Safety 2021-2030, the UN Road Safety Fund (UNRSF) announces the successful completion of two of pilot projects demonstrating the potential of targeted and coordinated action to save lives in low- and middle-income countries, where 90% of the 1.35 million annual road fatalities occur.
