International round-table “Aarhus Convention: Effective Public Participation For Good Governance, Healthy Environment And Sustainable Development”

The international round-table “Aarhus Convention: Effective Public Participation For Good Governance, Healthy Environment And Sustainable Development” took place in Tashkent on 1-2 June 2023.

The round table aimed to promote better understanding of benefits and opportunities offered by the Convention on Access to Information, Public Participation in Decision-making and Access to Justice in Environmental Matters (Aarhus Convention) and its Protocol on Pollutant Release and Transfer Registers (Protocol on PRTRs) as effective tools for supporting the countries in achieving good governance, healthy environment and sustainable development. The participants will share experiences of different governments and stakeholders in the implementation of Convention and the Protocol, including on matters related to legal frameworks, institutional settings and practical arrangements.

The round table was organised by the secretariat of the UNECE Aarhus Convention in cooperation with the Ministry of Ecology, Environmental Protection and Climate Change of Uzbekistan, German Society for International Cooperation (GIZ), United Nations Development Programme, Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe, and other partner organizations.
