Training workshop “From practitioner to practitioner: how to use the two global Water Conventions to promote cooperation on the ground.”

Training workshop “From practitioner to practitioner: how to use the two global Water Conventions to promote cooperation on the ground.”

03 - 04 July 2023
Geneva Switzerland

The training workshop was organised by the Water Convention secretariat as part of Programme area 1: Increasing awareness of and accession to the Convention and application of its principles drawing on the benefits of cooperation of the Convention’s programme of work 2022-2024 led by Estonia, Finland, France, Germany, Ghana and Hungary. It was organized with support of the European Union project “Promoting accession to the Water Convention - Phase II” and with financing from the Swiss Agency for Development and Cooperation (SDC) and the French Ministry for Europe and Foreign Affairs.

The training aimed to strengthen the capacities of key water experts involved in transboundary water cooperation and equip them with knowledge and skills required to promote the Conventions and support their effective implementation. The training also aimed to enable the use of the technical and policy guidance developed under the Water Convention (e.g. on legal aspects of cooperation and conclusion of agreements; benefits of cooperation; climate change adaptation; groundwater management; pollution prevention; the water-food-energy-ecosystem nexus approach; etc.) in support of transboundary cooperation in specific basins.

The training thereby contributed to the enlargement of the community of practitioners who will have a good understanding on the Conventions and can promote accession to Conventions and their implementation. It demonstrated to partner organizations how they could better use the Conventions in support of their efforts to strengthen governance frameworks and support implementation of climate-related commitments and achievement of SDGs and how participation in the Conventions could contribute to sustainability of projects and investments.

The training workshop brought together experts from countries, basin organizations, regional organizations, international organizations, development cooperation agencies and NGOs whose work is closely related to transboundary water cooperation.
