Workshop on the protection of groundwater as a source of drinking water in karst areas

Workshop on the protection of groundwater as a source of drinking water in karst areas

14 - 15 April 2008
Malinska, Island Krk Croatia

A Workshop on the protection of groundwater as a source of drinking water in karst areas was organized on 14 and 15 April 2008 at the invitation of the Ministry of Regional Development, Forestry and Water Management, Croatia. It took place in Malinska, island Krk, Croatia.

The theme of the Workshop was "protection of groundwater as a source of drinking water in karst areas", including the integrated management of shared transboundary groundwater. Its aim was to promote exchange of experience on the protection, sustainable utilization and management of karst groundwater resources, and to facilitate the establishment of a network of professionals working in karst groundwater management. The Workshop addressed health-related risks for drinking water quality due to karst groundwater contamination. It brought together groundwater and health managers, policymakers and technical experts, and provided a platform for sharing information and experience on groundwater management, potential diseases related to drinking water, and potential pollution and deterioration of groundwater. The Workshop was thus an opportunity to share lessons learned and to identify possible solutions for the better management of karstic aquifers.
