From 11 to 22 November 2024, the 29th Conference of the Parties to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (COP29) will take place in Baku, hosted by the Government of the Republic of Azerbaijan.
The UAE Framework for Global Climate Resilience adopted by the decision on the global goal on adaptation at COP 28 establishes as its first target to “significantly reducing climate-induced water scarcity and enhancing climate resilience to water-related hazards towards a climate-resilient water supply, climate-resilient sanitation and towards access to safe and affordable potable water for all”. The Framework also recognizes that climate change impacts are often transboundary in nature and may involve complex, cascading risks that can benefit from collective consideration and knowledge-sharing, climate-informed transboundary management and cooperation on global adaptation solutions. Another COP28 decision on the outcome of the first global stocktake recognized the crucial role of water and water-related ecosystems for adaptation as well as of international collaboration, including transboundary cooperation, for addressing climate change impacts and contributing to progress towards the goals of the Paris Agreement.
More information on the importance of transboundary water cooperation for climate change adaptation and mitigation is available at Progress on Transboundary Water Cooperation: Mid-term Status of SDG Indicator 6.5.2, with a Special Focus on Climate Change, Action-oriented document on mainstreaming transboundary water management and cooperation into Nationally Determined Contributions and National Adaptation Plans, the UN-Water Analytical Brief on Water for Climate Mitigation and advanced draft of the study on mainstreaming water supply, sanitation, transboundary water management and cooperation into Nationally Determined Contributions and National Adaptation Plansto be presented during COP29.
