Background

The Specialized Section on Standardization of Meat of the United Nations Economic Commission for Europe was created 1988and has united experts of more than 25 countries.

The draft of the UNECE Standard for Chicken (gallus domesticus) meat was presented by the delegation of the United States and discussed at the Specialized Section and Rapporteurs in May 2001 (Geneva, Switzerland), October 2001 (Washington, USA), April 2002 (Geneva, Switzerland) and September 2002 (Rennes, France).

At the session in Moscow a final reading of the standard will be held.

Objectives

The open points and reservations remaining in the text will be discussed. The Chairman will decide at that meeting if the standard can be proposed to the Working Party for adoption.

Some information on the National Poultry Research Institute

Geographical situation: 39 km from Moscow, on the Motorway to Leningrad, in the district of Solnechnogorski.

Personnel: 320 people, 165 (3 doctors and 29 masters) on the site of the institute.

Date of� creation: 1929

Tasks:

• Development of a scientific basis for the poultry industry.
• Creation of new industrial procedures.
• Conception of equipment for the different areas of production.
• Development of standards for the poultry industry.

Equipment:

• 15 research laboratories (chemistry, physics, food hygiene, economics, transformation poultry, finished products, eggs, baby food, revalorisation of wastes, drying, development of new material)
• Experimental sites: Poultry farm, poultry transformation factory, workshop for the construction of equipments, material park.
• Certification organism for certification of poultry products and eggs.
• Since three years the institute publishes a periodical called �Poultry and poultry products�

Collaborations:

The institute collaborates permanently with Russian transformation enterprises where its experts implement their invention and introduce new methods of production and ensure their functioning. The institute also collaborates with organisms from the United States, China and the Netherlands.
