The document sums up the outcome of the fourth session of the Committee for Trade, Industry and Enterprise Development and the fifty-sixth session of the Working Party on Standardization of Perishable Produce and Quality Development.

The document sums up the outcome of the meeting of rapporteurs on standardization of meat which was held in S�o Paulo, 24 to 27 September 2000.

The UN/ECE Standard for bovine carcases and cuts was adopted by the Working Party as presented in the Addenda to the report of the 9th session of the Specialized Section. Editorial amendments which have been made to the final publication will be reflected in the addenda to the report of this session. These addenda will also make reference to the page numbers in the final publication (for the time being in English only) so that French and Russian reader will be able to reference it easier.

Taking into account the different possibilities for publication of the color version of the standard discussions were held between the bureau of the Specialized Section and the secretariat. In order to ensure a speedy high-quality publication and efficient promotion of the standard it was decided to accept the offer from AUS-MEAT to publish the standard on behalf of the Specialized Section. Free copies will be available to each participant as well as each member of the UN/ECE. Further copies can be obtained from AUS-MEAT on a cost recovery basis.



(b) Further development of the bovine standard

Item 6 UN/ECE trade mark for meat

Initial discussions on preparing a draft protocol on conformity assessment (trade mark) have been held at the last sessions of the Specialized Section. The principle of the co-operation between the Specialized Section and the Working Party on Technical Harmonization and Standardization Policies (WP.6) was agreed by WP.7.



Item 7 Preparation of the meetings of rapporteurs and the next session of the Specialized Section



(a) Date and place



Delegations are invited to make proposals for dates and places of the next meetings of rapporteurs.

(b) Future Work



Delegations are invited to make proposals for the future work of the Specialized Section.



Item 8 Preparation of the 57th session of the Working Party on Standardization of Perishable Produce and Quality Development



Delegations are invited to mention any item that should be brought to the attention of the Working Party.



Item 9 Operational activities



Delegations are invited to discuss how the Specialized Section could assist countries in the further development of their meat trade.



Item 10 Other business



Any other subject can be discussed under this item.



Item 11 Election of officers



According to the Commission's Rules of Procedure and established practice, the Specialized Section is expected to elect a Chairman and a Vice-Chairman. At its ninth session the Group elected Mr. B. Carpenter (United States) as its Chairman and Mr. I. King (Australia) as its Vice-Chairman.

Item 12 Adoption of the report



The Specialized Section will adopt the report of its ninth session on the basis of a draft prepared by the secretariat.
