The environmental challenges in our region are many and interlinked. Air pollution caused some 600,000 deaths in 2012, and more than 100 million people still do not have access to safe drinking water and adequate sanitation. Added to these, releases of hazardous chemicals, climate change, effective engagement of the public in decision-making and access to environmental information and justice are among major concerns we need to address urgently.

UNECE taking the lead to organize a high-level event of the Regional Economic Commissions at CBD COP-15

The impacts of climate change, pollution and the loss of biodiversity are the most pressing environmental challenges for our planet.

From 25 April – 8 May 2022, the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD) will hold its 15th Conference of the Parties (COP-15) in Kunming. This paramount meeting is supposed to adopt the post 2020 global biodiversity framework.

UNECE and the UN Regional Commissions will organize a high-level event to highlight how they are aligning biodiversity targets into their portfolios of activities ’s and showcase the governance models in place to enhance coordination and technical support to countries on biodiversity.
