The environmental challenges in our region are many and interlinked. Air pollution caused some 600,000 deaths in 2012, and more than 100 million people still do not have access to safe drinking water and adequate sanitation. Added to these, releases of hazardous chemicals, climate change, effective engagement of the public in decision-making and access to environmental information and justice are among major concerns we need to address urgently.

50 years of environment at unece logo

The UNECE Commission Session in 1971 marked the real start of environmental action in the region, with the integration of environmental concerns in economic decision-making. For the past 50 years, UNECE has been the leading UN organization for environmental protection and governance in the pan-European region. The treaties, policy cooperation and assistance developed through these joint efforts,  help safeguard the environment for current and future generations.
