UN-ECE Transformative Innovation Network (ETIN), jointly with Vinnova, Sweden’s Innovation Agency, and Nesta, the United Kingdom’s Innovation Agency for social good, is organizing two connected policy dialogue sessions on the different approaches to transformative innovation and its application.
Session 1: Transformative innovation: policy objectives, promises and pitfalls
The first session will include:
- an introduction to the topic of mission-oriented policies and transformative innovation:
- its challenges and implications for innovation agencies and the role it plays in our overall efforts toward inclusive and sustainable development
- a debate featuring two perspectives on the mission-oriented policy framework with leading experts:
- laying out both the objective and practice of the framework, as well as points of caution and potential pitfalls drawing from historical experience, a deeper understanding of the dynamics of innovation, and the limits and unintended consequences of institutional capacity and incentives
- an interactive session with the participants and break out groups
- case studies showcase different approaches to addressing the SDGs through (transformative) innovation
- a networking session
Session 2: Bringing transformative innovation policies to life: the role of governments
The second session will include:
- a few introductory remarks on the role of the government in fostering a transformative innovation
- a debate on agencies and their effect on fostering transformative innovation ecosystem with leading experts:
- deriving from the historic example of DARPA and its impact, successes, and pitfalls, we will dig deeper into understanding the changed role of governments in addressing societal changes through transformative innovation.
- an interactive session with series of presentations on the capabilities needed to drive transformative innovation in agencies by experts from academia, governmental agencies, and business:
- followed by break out discussions diving further into each topic.
