Strengthening Stability and Peace through
Investments:
the CEI Summit Economic Forum
(Trieste, 21-24 November 2001)
As private sector financial flows now far outstrip public
sector aid programmes while at the same time facilitating an effective
allocation of investment resources, the promoting of private sector investment
has become a major item on the agenda of international transition and
development assistance.
In parallel with the Summit of the Central European
Initiative (CEI) Heads of Governments, the 4th CEI Summit
Economic Forum (Trieste, 21-24 November 2001) is designed to be a top
level meeting and matching point for investment project developers, investors
and financial institutions as well as investment promotion agencies, chambers
of commerce, and international organizations. Forum activities include formal
forum sessions, as well as general informal meetings and separate sessions on
particular subjects. Project opportunities will be presented which will focus
on both individual countries and investment sectors. This activity and other
Forum’s sessions are organized in cooperation with the United Nations
Economic Commission for Europe (UNECE).
Over one thousand participants are expected to attend the
CEI Forum.
UNECE and CEI, which comprises 17 member countries1,
have jointly developed a mechanism of matching business partners, the
so-called Project Opportunity Methodology (POM). Investment projects
are proposed in a standard format and are published via the CEI Secretariat
and its Focal Point at UNECE. This year’s publication "INVESTIGUIDE"
features 121 project proposals. In the future, the project proposals will also
be accessible through the CEI web site (www.ceinet.org).
Both UNECE and CEI recognize that promoting investment and
business partnerships is an integral part of the process of bringing political
stability and social progress to the economies of central and eastern Europe.
"Growing Together", this year’s CEI Forum theme, is a recognition
of this new understanding of and approach to development policy in an ever
more integrated European continent.
