ENVIRONMENT
AND HEALTH
Ministerial
Conference, London, 16-18 June 1999
On Wednesday, 16 June, Europe's Environment and Health Ministers will meet in
London for a three-day conference.
In the run-up to this
ministerial gathering, the United Nations Economic Commission for
Europe (UN/ECE) has drawn up a Protocol on Water and Health to
its Convention on the Protection and Use of Transboundary Waters
and International Lakes, together with the World Health
Organization's Regional Office for Europe (WHO/EURO).
The Ministers are expected the
sign the Protocol during an official ceremony on Thursday, 17
June, at the Queen Elizabeth II Conference Centre. The signing
ceremony will be one of the highlights of the Conference.
The Convention and its new
Protocol will also be the subject of several workshops and side
events during the three-day meeting. NGOs, academics,
representatives from national water and health administrations
and from international organizations will get together and share
their experience.
During the Conference, the
Ministers will also report on the follow-up to the Regional
Ministerial Conference on Transport and Environment. Back in
November 1997 they adopted a Programme of Joint Action to reduce
the impact of transport on the environment and they will take
advantage of their meeting in London to take stock.
