32 countries and the European
Community sign two new protocols to the Convention on Long-range
Transboundary Air Pollution

On Wednesday, 24 June 1998, on the occasion of the fourth
"Environment for Europe" Ministerial Conference in
Aarhus, Denmark, the Parties to the UN/ECE Convention on
Long-range Transboundary Air Pollution adopted two new protocols
to the Convention: one on heavy metals, the other on persistent
organic pollutants or POPs.
The following countries have signed the two protocols:
Austria, Belgium, Bulgaria, Canada, Croatia, Cyprus, Czech
Republic, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Iceland,
Ireland, Italy, Latvia, Liechtenstein, Lithuania, Luxembourg,
Netherlands, Norway, Poland, Portugal, Republic of Moldova,
Romania, Slovakia, Slovenia, Sweden, Switzerland, Ukraine, United
Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland, United States of
America, and the European Community. The former Yugoslav Republic
of Macedonia submitted a Declaration in lieu of signing the
protocols.
