SIGNATURE OF A MEMORANDUM BETWEEN THE ECONOMIC COMMISSION FOR EUROPE AND THE COMMONWEALTH OF INDEPENDENT STATES

This morning, 23 April 1997, Mr Yves Berthelot, Executive Secretary of the
Economic Commission for Europe, and Mr Valery Serov, Vice Prime Minister of
the Government of the Russian Federation, signed a Memorandum in the Salon Russe of the Palais des Nations in Geneva, in the presence of
Mr Vladimir Novitsky, Deputy Chairman of the Board, Interstate Economic
Committee of the Economic Union of the Commonwealth of Independent States,
Mr Alexander Smirnov, Minister of the Russian Federation, Plenipotentiary
Representative to the Interstate Economic Committee of the Economic Union of
the CIS, and Mr Serguei Krylov, Ambassador, Permanent Representative of the
Russian Federation to the United Nations Office at Geneva.
This memorandum between the secretariat of the Economic Commission for
Europe and the Interstate Economic Committee of the Economic Union of the
Commonwealth of Independent States aims to promote the application of the
norms and standards developed by the UN/ECE in the countries of the CIS.
To this end, the parties are committed to exchanging information in this field,
conducting regular consultations and joint research, and organizing seminars and
internships for experts.
