United States forest products market crash impacts UNECE region markets in 2007 and 2008 |
The United Nations Economic Commission for Europe (UNECE) and the Food and Agricultural Organization (FAO) just released the UNECE/FAO Forest Products Annual Market Review, 2007-2008. Its 12 chapters cover all forest products market sectors as well as interlinked policy developments in the UNECE region of Europe, North America and the CIS. In addition to the market and policy analysis, considerable statistical information may be found in the electronic annexes of statistical tables available on the Review’s website. In line with the joint UNECE Timber Committee and FAO European Forestry Commission Market Discussions to be held on 21-22 October 2008 during the European Forest Week, in Rome, the Review’s theme is “Green building’s impact on the forest sector in the UNECE region.”

EUROPEAN FOREST WEEK

The European Forest Week, which will take place in Brussels , Rome and all over Europe, will celebrate the contribution of European forests to mitigating climate change, providing wood and renewable energy, securing the supply of fresh water and protecting our environment. A series of events highlighting what needs to be done to utilize fully the potential of European forests are being planned in countries throughout the continent. Offers of national or local events are welcome. The four days in Rome from 21 to 24 October, will feature discussions on climate change and forests, energy and forests, water and forests and "working together for European forests". There will be many opportunities to learn and share experience on the major topics of the day with leading specialists from the forest sector and elsewhere on a wide variety of topics. The regular market discussions will also take place as well as a workshop on green building.
The European Forest Week 2008 was declared by the ministers responsible for forests of 46 European countries and is jointly prepared by the European Commission, the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations, the Ministerial Conference on the Protection of Forests in Europe and the United Nations Economic Commission for Europe, in close collaboration with the Presidency of the Council of the European Union at the time of the event, France. Its stated objectives are to:
- Increase the visibility of the forest based-sector and its contribution to development of economy and society in Europe.
- Raise awareness about its important contributions to mitigating climate change, providing freshwater and protecting the environment.
- Engage other sectors in a participatory dialogue on forest related issues.

Our Programme to 2013
The Special Session, which took place 28-30 April 2008, agreed on the broad lines of programme priorities and activities for the period 2008-13, reflected in the Strategic Plan of the joint integrated programme of work on timber and forestry of the UNECE Timber Committee and the FAO European Forestry Commission. This plan will be reviewed by the Bureaux and then be put forward to the joint session of the Committee and the Commission at the European Forest Week, 20-24 October 2008.The Strategic Plan along with the report of the Special Session, and background information on the 2007-2008 strategic review process are available on the Strategic Review website. |
